The history of the Foundation for Women’s Resources is built from the lives of women leaders driven by a common purpose. The grit, gusto and determination that drove the founders is alive today in the programs and projects of the Foundation. With a common mission, to improve the personal, economic and professional status of women, the leaders of the Foundation continue to empower other women leaders to promote a legacy of leadership that will enable future generations to make a lasting impact.

Here is a brief overview of the historic events of the Foundation and its programs:

Year Event

1973

Josephine Hall, Marilyn Cazort and Janice McCoy incorporated the Texas Women's Caucus in San Antonio.

1975

Texas Women's Caucus changes name to Womanpower, An Educational Fund.

1976

Sarah Weddington, Jane Hickie, Ann Richards, Cathy Bonner, Judith Guthrie and Martha Smiley elected as the board of the corporation.

1977

Womanpower publishes its first educational project, a book titled Texas Women in Politics. Womanpower changes name to the Foundation for Women's Resources.

1978

The Foundation launches its first major statewide project, "Texas Women: A Celebration of History." The project was the first large-scale effort to document and publicize the contributions of women to the state's history.

1981/82

The "Texas Women: A Celebration of History" project is a touring exhibit at museums in San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Amarillo, El Paso and Houston.

1982

Board President Cathy Bonner, proposes the creation of Leadership Texas — a program to identify and develop Texas' women leaders.

1983

Leadership Texas is launched.

The "Texas Women: A Celebration of History" project goes on permanent display at Texas Woman's University.

1987

The Foundation launches Leadership America, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.

1992

“Options for Girls: An Anthology on Science and Math” is developed to encourage young women to pursue lifelong interest and potential careers in math and science.

1996

Power Pipeline is launched.

2000

The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future opens at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. The museum tells the stories of women’s accomplishments and contributions to American history.

2005

Foundation for Women’s Resources relocates to Dallas, Texas.

2007

The Foundation celebrates the 25th anniversary of Leadership Texas and the 10th anniversary of Power Pipeline.

Inauguration of Richards Scholars Endowment Fund. 

2008

The Foundation re-organizes to provide membership to all program graduates.
