Leadership America was launched with the encouragement and support of memorable Texas women, including Governor Ann Richards, presidential journalist Liz Carpenter, US Representative Barbara Jordan, writer Molly Ivins, First Lady Lady Bird Johnson and US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. The inspiring legacies of these and many other notable women are reflected in the more than 2,000 Leadership America alumnae, including US Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri; several members of the US House of Representatives; Laura Liswood, Secretary General of the Council of World Women Leaders; former US Ambassador and distinguished professor at Harvard's JFK School of Public Policy, Swanee Hunt; university presidents and professors; physicians and executive nurses and other public figures. Leadership America alumnae are also found in our nation's leading businesses and corporations; education institutions; medical and scientific arenas; the arts; entrepreneurial endeavors; and nonprofit organizations. Where ever they are, Leadership America women are making positive differences in a deep and diverse array of professional and personal spheres of influence.
